We're Ready
for Our Close-Up, Mr. Spelling
In March of 1997, the GALA Committee was installing their portion of the
"Uncommon Sense" exhibition at LA's Museum of Contemporary Art.
The writers and producers of Melrose Place agreed to shoot an entire scene
in the GALA Committee's actual exhibition space. The writers went so far
as to include the opening of the "Uncommon Sense" exhibit into
the story line!
Amanda and Kyle (pictured above), tour the exhibit featuring artwork created
by GALA that adorned the shows' sets for the past season and a half..talk
about de ja vu! Featured prominently is the "Fireflies" painting,
aka "The Bombing of Baghdad" - a still from CNN's footage of the
initial strike on Iraq during the first Gulf War. You can also see: (1)
Sam's painting of the Viper Room, (2) the "TV Phage" virus sculpture,
and (3) "Think of the Re-Runs" - a homage to Barbara Krueger.
If you look closely, the couple in the background behind Kyle and Amanda
are Mel Chin (the artist who created the project) and Deborah Siegel (the
show's set decorator who gave the go-ahead for GALA's presence on the show
in the first place).
One interesting side note: this scene was initially cut by the show's editors.
Executive Producer Frank South stepped in and demanded the scene be place
back into the show. |
